⭐ Aims of the Day
• Feel confident using an OS map
• Understand basic navigation techniques
• Be able to plan and follow a simple route
• Improve awareness of safety while walking
• Work as a team to solve route-finding challenges
• Build confidence travelling on foot in unfamiliar areas
We will cover:
✔ Map symbols & grid references
✔ Measuring distance & pacing
✔ Setting & following a bearing ( where possible)
✔ Route planning & decision making
✔ Using features & contour lines to navigate
✔ Dynamic risk assessment while walking
This will be a practical, activity-based day with lots of learning while out on the route.
👟 What Participants Need to Bring
• Weather-appropriate outdoor clothing
• Waterproof coat (and trousers if possible)
• Sturdy walking boots or walking shoes
• Filled water bottle
• Packed lunch & snacks
• Warm layers / hat & gloves (if cold)
• Small rucksack to carry everything
• Personal medication (e.g. inhalers)
Optional but useful:
• Notebook & pen
• Compass (if you have one)
🧭 Equipment Provided by Leaders / Organisers
• OS maps for the area
• Spare compasses
• Route plans & activity sheets
• First aid kit
• Emergency contact & safety plan
• Risk assessment & supervision
• Attendance registers
• High-visibility items if required
🔐 Safety & Supervision
• Activities will be fully supervised
• Participants will walk in small groups
• Leaders will carry emergency equipment
• Weather-dependent adjustments may be made
• We will follow Scout/Guiding safety guidelines where applicable
📍 Start/Finish Location
The exact start and finish point will be confirmed shortly and shared with all participants and leaders in advance but we will be in the Louth area
